Alba Luz, her husband Roberto, and their twin daughters Monica and Veronica Rueda run their farm as a close-knit family team. Their land is a true paradise, defined by its rich diversity. In addition to the 32,000 coffee trees grown under the shade of larger trees, they also cultivate crops for their personal use. Environmental conservation is a priority for Alba Luz and her family, and they’ve set aside several hectares to protect a forested area at the farm’s highest point, which serves as a sanctuary for various mammals, reptiles, and especially birds. During early morning and evening walks around Santa Cecilia, the family enjoys the melodic symphony of the many bird species, which are often heard more than seen. A seasoned participant in the Best of Santander competition, Alba Luz values the learning experience gained from the expert feedback on her coffee. This year’s entry was carefully handpicked from only ripe cherries, which were then depulped, washed, dried, and meticulously selected to ensure only the finest beans were packed and sent to the FNC.

What is the FNC you ask:

In the context of Colombian coffee, FNC stands for the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia (National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia). The FNC is a non-profit organization established in 1927 that represents the interests of Colombian coffee growers. It plays a significant role in promoting Colombian coffee both domestically and internationally, providing technical assistance to farmers, supporting sustainability practices, and ensuring quality control. The FNC is also responsible for managing the iconic Café de Colombia brand, which ensures the reputation and quality of Colombian coffee worldwide.
