What is a peaberry you ask?

A peaberry coffee bean is what you may think it is shape wise, it truly looks like a small pea as opposed to the flat halved ‘coffee bean’ (which is actually a coffee cherry seed). The peaberry is a natural mutation that occurs in about 5–10% of coffee cherries. Typically, a coffee cherry contains two beans that develop with their flat sides facing each other. However, in the case of a peaberry, only one bean forms inside the cherry, and it develops into a small, rounded shape (you guessed it like a pea).
This unique shape can affect the way the bean roasts, as it rolls more evenly during the process. Peaberry beans are often considered more flavorful because their shape allows for a more uniform roast, and some believe the concentration of nutrients in a single bean enhances the taste. They are often hand-sorted and sold as a specialty product, and this lot is truly special and you will notice that in your cup.
